On Thursday, May 10th, Gov. Hickenlooper signed into law HB 1258, a bill that opens up the market for vehicle charging. By eliminating regulatory uncertainty, the new law creates opportunities for retail businesses to operate charging stations, giving drivers options for recharging their vehicles away from home. Though much remains to be done, including getting more renewable energy in place to power our electric cars, we’ve taken a big initial step toward reducing global warming pollution and dangerous tailpipe emissions in our transportation system.
The signing of the electric vehicle bill comes at a promising time. Gov. Hickenlooper has declared May 17 Colorado Electric Vehicle Day. Communities throughout the state will be holding events to showcase the latest vehicle and charging technology.

**Check out the Canopy Airport Parking @ DIA**
Canopy Airport Parking became a member of the Denver Metro Clean Cities Coalition in 2011 and is making quite a statement with their soon-to-be-certified LEED parking facility at Denver International Airport. Everything from the parking structure to the pavement was made of recycled or waste materials and the facility utilizes solar, wind and geothermal power to supply electricity and heat to the structure and offices. Canopy is also ahead of the curve in offering free EV charging with the JuiceBar charging station. They presently have six charging stations on site which provide both level I and Level II charging. Transportation to DIA is provided by shuttle buses fueled with biodiesel and CNG. Canopy invites Clean Cities members to check out their facility this holiday season.

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is proud to announce a new fleet community website which includes among other things a Fleet Sustainability Dashboard which tracks participating agencies' fleet fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Interactive graphs show, for example, petroleum use year to date, instances where alternative fuel is well used, and opportunities for improved alternative fuel use. The dashboard is being rolled out to a limited number of federal agencies with broader distribution expected in 2012.
Propane is helping police departments and municipalities trim fuel expenses
In looking to save money and be more environmentally friendly, police departments across the southeast are turning to propane to fuel their fleets. Police departments cite the lower cost of the fuel, the engine conversions and the fueling infrastructure as reasons why propane is a good fit. Jackson County Georgia is saving between $110,000 and $145,000 per year in fuel costs alone after converting 60 squad cars to propane. At a time when many police forces across the country are scaling back on personnel due to tight budgets, this type of savings has far reaching implications. In addition, the vehicles last longer and require less maintenance as compared to comparable gasoline powered vehicles.
